Can you believe that January is over? Where did it go? January is a funny month and it can take time to get back into the swing of things, so I hope that with the beginning of February you have found your “2015 feet”, so to speak.
Starting a fresh new month got me thinking about what I put into and onto my body. We all know that clean eating is a really great idea, but how about other aspects of your day to day life?
Proper skincare is key to looking and feeling healthy and youthful and we all have our own special routines. I have suffered from “prickly heat” since I was very small, which has always proved troublesome as I love basking in the sunshine. This year after a particularly bad reaction, I was advised to use paraben (preservative) and fragrance free products and the rash disappeared... never to return, even in the intense heat of Bali and Australia this Christmas! It goes without saying that I am beyond thrilled and have been passing the message on wherever I can.
Finding paraben and fragrance free cosmetics isn’t as easy as you might think but Clinique (especially the sun cream) and Aveeno are firm favourites along with the Dove Extra Sensitive range. Not only did my prickly heat disappear but my skin has never looked better, all those tiny bumps on my arms have vanished too!
Given the effect on my skin, I have also started using Herbal Essences Clearly Naked shampoo and conditioner on my hair and I’m loving the results. They contain no parabens, dyes or silicone... fewer chemicals has to be a good thing, right?
Recently my mind started to wander while I was relaxing in child’s pose, forehead resting on my yoga mat... my kinda smelly yoga mat I realised! I wondered about the best way to freshen things up and thought I might try a DIY cleaner, fewer nasties!
After some brief research and a quick hunt for a spray bottle I managed to concoct my own rather yummy cleaning spray. It’s a lovely way to freshen up your beloved yoga/pilates mat and couldn’t be easier. It’s also nice to know I’m only breathing in natural scents while trying to chill in pigeon pose!

Yoga Mat Spray
- 75ml warm water
- 75ml white vinegar
- 12 drops essential oil (I used orange and tea tree for an antibacterial zing!)
- Spray mat all over and leave to stand for a few minutes.
- Wipe with warm damp cloth.
- Don’t forget the other side.
- Leave to dry, in the fresh air if you can.
